Odyssey X86 Tutorial: Installing OpenWrt

This article tutorial will show you how to install OpenWrt. With this software, the Odyssey – X86 can turn into an internet router, which means it can provide internet connectivity to your smart devices!

The Hardware Requirements

  • A Computer

  • Odyssey X86 or Odyssey Blue

  • A USB Drive (More than 8GB is required)

  • A Monitor

  • A Keyboard

  • A Mouse

  • Two Ethernet Cables(2)

Download the OpenWrt Installation Image

Initially, You need to download first the OpenWrt image installer. Choose the version you wanted; Scroll to x86 -> 64, and download your required version; I recommend downloading the newest version.

Creating a Bootable USB

Provide your Bootable USB

To start with, you need to format the USB stick. If you are using a Windows Computer, you can easily format the USB drive by right-clicking the USB and select Format. Check out previous article about making a bootable USB.

By the way, Choose FAT32 for the File System.

Download Flash Burner

Next, download the Open Source Flash burner BalenaEtcher or Rufus.

Writing the OS File Image into the USB

Then, Select the downloaded Operating System Image, select the formatted USB Drive, and choose Flash! Now, the bootable USB ready to use.

Installing OpenWrt

Enabling CSM Mode

After making a USB installer, you need t plug-in your bootable USB, Monitor, and keyboard to the Odyssey – X86 and power it up. When booting up, keep pressing the DEL key to enter the setup/BIOS screen. Afterward, navigate to Advanced -> CSM Support and press Enter to enable it.

Install the OS

Secondly, Reboot the Odyssey – X86 and keep pressing F7 to enter the boot manager screen. Select the bootable USB and press Enter.

Thirdly, Select OpenWrt and press Enter. Just follow through with the instructions on the screen, and you’re good to go.

To resume, hit Enter, and you will see a similar screen, just like the image below.

Now, the OpenWrt Software is installed and ready to use, but we need to configure some more of the system!


Furthermore, let’s continue to configure to access the OpenWrt system from another PC’s web interface. Enter the following command in the shell of OpenWrt:

vi /etc/config/network 

You need to change the settings to as follows:

This will be the IP address for configuring LAN settings so that you can use this IP to access the router. On the image, the IP is set to

Additionally, In vim, type I first to be insert mode so that you can edit. When done with editing, press the ESC key and type: wq and enter to save and quit.

Accessing from Another Computer

Now, you can access OpenWrt from another computer via LuCI web interface. Simply use an Ethernet cable and connect the Ethernet Port close to the HDMI port to the other PC. Afterward, connect another ethernet cable to the second Ethernet port of the Odyssey – X86 and the modem (This may be varied, such as the PPPoE method).

Hence, go to your computer, and type the IP address specified earlier, which is in the web browser search bar, and you should see the following screen:

Now, you can access your OpenWrt from another PC!

Configuring LAN and WAN

Navigate to Network -> Interfaces and configure WAN settings for internet access:

This shows the all the interfaces settings for OpenWrt. Here, simply make sure the the WAN(eth1) port is connected to the internet and is set to DHCP client Protocol as follow:

Now, your computer should access to the internet and your router is set to go!

Install the OS

Secondly, Reboot the Odyssey – X86 and keep pressing F7 to enter the boot manager screen. Select the bootable USB and press Enter.
